Get Ready for Father's Day!

This Sunday, we celebrate Father’s Day and thank every dad and father figure for their love and support. June also happens to be Men’s Health Month – an opportunity to remind ourselves that although breast cancer is much more prominent in women, it can affect men, too.

    A Growing Demand for Innovation

We are proud to announce that after attending the Society of Breast Imaging Symposium, Koning has seen the largest pipeline of orders in our history. There is increasing demand for our Vera Breast CT device from a range of healthcare providers, including hospitals, imaging centers, and private practices across the United States and internationally.

    Medication and Sun Protection

Most sun damage can be avoided by staying in the shade, applying sunscreen regularly, and favoring loose and light clothing. However, when certain medicines, your skin can at a much higher risk of damage.

Some medicines contain ingredients that may cause photosensitivity, making the skin sensitive to sunlight and an easy target for sunburn-like symptoms, rashes and other side effects. It can be triggered by products applied to the skin or medicines taken by mouth or injected. Photosensitivity can also occur after exposure to either natural sunlight or artificial light, such as a tanning booth. These symptoms may be triggered by a wide range of medicine, such as certain acne medications, oral contraceptives, anti-arrhytmic drugs, antidepressants, and antifungals.

    Lemon-Rosemary Sorbet

Summer is all about cooling – frozen sorbet is a wonderful way to enjoy the fruit of the season in a dessert while still staying relatively healthy. This lemon sorbet with a hint of rosemary is also naturally fat-free and vegan and does not require an ice-cream maker, making it a treat anyone can enjoy.

Koning Sees Surge in Orders Following Recent Installations at Prominent Hospitals and Attendance at the Society of Breast Imaging Symposium

NORCROSS, Ga.May 15, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Koning Corporation, the leading manufacturer of breast computed tomography (CT) systems, announced today that it has received the largest pipeline of orders in its history. World Meditation Day

This Sunday is World Meditation Day, a call to clear our minds in peace. Although meditation has gained popularity as an activity, it may still bring mental images of yoga retreats and Tibetian monks, an unattainable and foreign lifestyle. In reality, anyone can meditate from anywhere without special equipment.

Happy Mother’s Day with Koning Team!

This week is all about Mothers – grandmothers, expecting moms, mother figures – we honor them all. Our Vice President of Marketing, Naomi Cosman, recently had the pleasure of discussing breast cancer and family history with Allyn Rose at our Norcross headquarters. Allyn is a breast cancer awareness advocate, public speaker, former Miss USA, and our newest spokeswoman at Koning.

    The 3D Advantage

The limitations of conventional screening methods are getting an increasing amount of attention as the evolution of breast imaging shifts its focus on the latest development: dedicated cone beam breast computed tomography (CBBCT). Our Vera by Koning Breast CT device was FDA -approved to provide 3D images of the breast for diagnostic purposes in 2015, and in accordance, a study by Ma et al. concludes that CBBCT features do indeed have distinctive promise for screening breast cancer and preventative care.

5 Ways to Protect the Environment and Your Health

This year’s Earth Day falls on a Saturday, making the upcoming weekend an extended celebration of awareness about environmental issues. Although it may not be obvious, the health of our planet connects to breast health as well. Here are five things things you can do to protect both:

    1. Avoid tobacco in all its forms, including exposure to secondhand smoke. In addition to well-known health risks, the cultivation of tobacco for human consumption poses significant challenges to the environment.

    Compression and Pain

As the old saying goes, women are often taught that “beauty is pain”. From high heels, hair removal, cosmetic surgery, tight clothing and various treatments and peels, the list never ends. That same philosophy seems to extend into other areas as well: For women, healthcare and self-care can often be pain. Women are still more likely to be offered minor tranquilizers and antidepressants than analgesic pain medication; they are less likely to be referred for further diagnostic investigations than men are, and women’s pain is more likely to be seen as having an emotional or a psychological cause. Additionally, drug dosages are calculated based on studies done overwhelmingly on male subjects, and events like childbirth have historically been considered synonymous with “natural pain”, without pressing need for anesthetic innovation.

    April is Stress Awareness Month

In today’s hectic climate, feeling stressed is all too common. With worldwide tense events, rising energy prices and violence, it’s no wonder many of us are may have a hard time managing the pressure outside of our personal challenges at home and at work. In a recent global Gallup survey, as many as four in 10 adults worldwide said they experienced a lot of worry or stress on a regular basis. While a certain amount of stress can be healthy, minimizing chronic anxiety should be a priority.

    The Koning Lead

Innovation is the heart of change – by advancing technology, we are advancing the fight against breast cancer and giving women more options.

The central problem with conventional modalities is age-old: Compression deters women from getting traditional mammograms, and skipping these appointments can be detrimental to early detection. Our Koning Vera breast CT is developed specifically for the detection of breast cancer, while also eliminating painful compression and implant rupture risk.

We take great pride in what sets us apart:

FDA Approval: We are the only FDA PMA cleared breast CT device.

    Mammography Regulations Modernized

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has just updated its mammography regulations, affecting physicians and medical centers across the country. These updates will require mammography facilities to notify patients about the density of their breasts, and help interpreting physicians better categorize and assess mammograms.

    Saint Patrick's Day Snack

St. Patrick's Day is a festive occasion not only for the Irish people. Whether you want to honor the patron saint of Ireland or simply party with friends, this March 17th is a perfect chance to try out a new green recipe. Though it may not all be traditional, this tasty recipe by Erin Clarke is a vegan, delicious choice to celebrate.

Highlighting Innovation in Breast Cancer on International Women's Day

International Women’s Day is undeniably connected to our core values at Koning. As we celebrate today, we proudly continue to further our mission of giving women’s health the attention it deserves.

Breast cancer affects millions of women and their families every year. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 287,850 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed this year, and approximately 43,000 women with a breast cancer diagnosis will die.

    National Nutrition Month

Happy March, and happy National Nutrition Month!

Conscious eating can be tricky when leading a busy life. Most of us do not have access to organic, fresh ingredients every single day, and so eating takeout and roaming the grocery isles hungry and tired sounds more familiar. Among many complex reasons, this is part of why one of one out of three US adults are currently overweight or obese. According to The Lancet, estimates predict that if US trends continue unabated, roughly half of all men and women will be obese by 2030.

    Breast Cancer and Sleep

Sleep issues are very common, especially for people going through cancer treatment and recovery. Patients newly diagnosed with breast cancer report sleep issues at a rate of about double the typical population, as it can understandably be very stressful to worry about finances, lost wages, side effects, and prognosis.

While it is typical for sleep to be somewhat disturbed in the immediate postoperative period, nearly half of breast cancer survivors continue to have consistent insomnia after treatment. During treatment, other side effects may also play a role in sleep issues, including headache, fatigue, nausea, shortness of breath, and night sweats.

    Valentine’s Day Smoothie

We hope your Valentine’s Tuesday was full of love. Whether you are done celebrating or only getting started this weekend, we have a vibrant treat suggestion to stay on theme all week.

Dragon fruit, also called pitaya, can usually be found year-round in the frozen section of grocery stores. You may also find whole dragon fruit in the fresh produce area. Dragon fruit has amazing health benefits as it is low in calories but filling, high in vitamin C, and of course, mesmerizing to look at.

For the bright magenta color of this smoothie, look for pink flesh dragon fruit instead of white.

    Black History Month 2023

February is Black History Month – an opportunity to both celebrate and look ahead. In healthcare, there is a notable lack of Black representation in active doctors and physicians. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, only 5% of all active physicians in the United States are Black, compared to 56% of white physicians. Shockingly, Black women make for less than 3% of physicians in the US.

    The Koning Advantage

Over the years, the main objective for Koning has been pinpointing and improving the many limitations of traditional breast imaging options, ultimately translating into lower morbidity and mortality from breast cancer. In a clinical review cowritten by 3 clinicians, the distinct advantages of cone-beam breast computed tomography (CBBCT) suggest significant improvement to breast imaging as we know it:

Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This week, we honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Had he not been assassinated in 1968 at the age of 39, he would have celebrated his 94th birthday this year. While Dr. King acted as the driving force behind nonviolent resistance to achieve equal rights for Black Americans, he also highlighted injustice in health care. While speaking at the annual meeting of the Medical Committee for Human Rights in 1966, Dr. King noted the following: “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and the most inhuman.”

Last of 2022: Our New Scientific Advisory Board

Koning is proud to step into 2023 with the launch of our new Scientific Advisory Board just behind. Last December, we created a new system to get feedback and recommendations from a team of seasoned professionals. This allows us to provide technology that generates superior images suitable to reading radiologists while also allowing for an improved patient experience.

Week of Action: White House Details Progress from the Cancer Cabinet

In July of 2022, The White House announced its new “Cancer Cabinet” line-up, which is part of President Joe Biden’s Cancer Moonshot initiative. By December, the Moonshot initiative expanded to involve multiple federal agencies, including the National Cancer Institute, the US Food and Drug Administration, the CDC and the National Institutes of Health, alongside the Departments of Labor and Commerce, NASA and the White House Gender Policy Council.

Making and Keeping Resolutions for 2023

New beginnings, be that a birthday or a new year tend to motivate aspirational behavior. As 2022 draws to a close, around 40% of Americans still make New Years resolutions, although only 10% feel they are successful in keeping them.

For 2022, the most popular resolutions were living healthier, personal improvement and happiness, and losing weight. Typical reasons for failure included having unrealistic goals, not keeping track of progress, and having made too many resolutions at once.

Are You Getting Enough Vitamin D?

December 21st officially marks the darkest day of the year, and although it means lighter days are ahead, there are still many gloomy weeks to get through. Self-care is particularly important to combat seasonal depression.

Beyond the mental aspect, the lack of sunlight means there may also be reason to stock up on supplements, particularly vitamin D. While most vitamins can be absorbed from a balanced diet, vitamin D is naturally present in very few foods.

    2022 Holiday Gift Guide

Gift-shopping can take a toll on anyone. Many can relate to compromising their free time, and feeling pressure to find something that tops last year’s ideas. Our gift-guide is tailored for those who value sustainability, environment, and wellness in all phases of life.

Here are some meaningful gift ideas we hunted down, so you don’t have to:

Non- Alcoholic Beverages for the Holidays

Celebrations during the holidays is a time when some people are more likely to drink beyond their limits than at other times of the year. Unfortunately, the use of alcohol is linked to many types of cancer, including breast cancer, and even moderate alcohol use isn’t risk-free.

Without taking away from outings and family time, the new holiday season is a chance to give non-alcoholic cocktails and drinks a chance. Our mulled wine recipe holds the traditional flavors of cinnamon and cloves, with a (typically Nordic) twist of almond flakes and raisins as toppings.

    Fun Facts About Breasts

Check out these fun facts about breasts:

    1. Humans have known about breast cancer for a long time. The Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus that dates back to as early as 3,000-2,500 B.C.E. describes cases of breast cancer.

    2. Larger, more sore breasts can often be the very first symptom of pregnancy. Breasts can grow significantly in the first trimester before the stomach shows any signs.

    Thanksgiving with Cancer

Food, family and gratitude are the staples of an American Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, cancer does not just go away after the awareness month celebrations and does not dissolve with holiday spirit. Those living with cancer are often silent about their own battles as they try to give their all to their family – they may struggle with a lack of energy, a compromised immune system, pain and constant fatigue, yet may still be expected to make the most of the holidays.

    A Vegetarian Thanksgiving Alternative

Thanksgiving is about getting together with family and loved ones, being grateful, and celebrating the start of the holiday season. Many components of the traditional Thanksgiving table are healthy and breast cancer -friendly: kale, butternut squash, cranberries, apples, walnuts, roasted carrots and brussel sprouts make for tasty and nutritious sides.

Although traditional mains, like turkey, are by no means detrimental to your health, we recommend favoring vegetarian dishes this year. Roasted cauliflower, for instance, is a creative substitute for turkey. Try out the following recipe from ABCV's chef, Neal Harden, that is sure to please any crowd:

    Diabetes and Breast Cancer

November is American Diabetes Month, a time when communities across the country come together to bring awareness to diabetes. This month’s cause affects more than 37 million Americans, that is 1 in 10.

Fortunately, it is possible to learn to live with diabetes. Making a diabetes meal plan with help from your health care team can be helpful, along with choosing foods that are lower in calories, saturated fat, trans fat, sugar, and salt. Being physically active and staying on your medication for diabetes, even when you feel good, is very important as well.

    Breast Implants and Breast Cancer

Breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgical procedure in the US., with over 365,000 new breast augmentations done in 2021.

Although it is a safe operation and most people experience no serious complications, having implants does not mean that getting scans is any less important. In fact, if you are getting a breast cancer screening with implants, doctors may have trouble seeing cancerous masses on imaging scans. Breast implants consist of either saline or silicone, and these materials can block parts of the breast from X-rays. Some medical facilities may also have little experience in properly scanning patients with them.
